Defence

Defence speech to match your slides

At the obrona (defence) you usually have a few minutes to present the essence of your thesis. We prepare a text of about 7 minutes, tied to your slides. The sentences are short, so they are easy to say and remember.

What to say at your thesis defence: a speech that fits the slides

The opening talk at the obrona is short, and students who struggle with it are rarely short of content. What they lack is a spoken version of it. Written academic Polish, with long sentences and passive constructions, is hard to say aloud under pressure and hard for the committee to follow. A defence speech needs a different register: one idea per sentence and clear signposts such as “first”, “the main result is” and “to conclude”.

The speech is written slide by slide, so you always know which part of the text belongs to the slide on screen, and timed to about seven minutes unless your department sets another limit. It opens with the customary address to the committee and closes with a brief thank-you, in the form usual at Polish universities.

If Polish is not your first language, mark the words you find hard to pronounce and tell us: we can replace them with simpler equivalents without changing the meaning. Practise the opening and closing lines until you can say them without looking; the middle can stay closer to your notes.

The speech costs 25 €, or 85 € together with the slides, and the price is the same for any deadline. It is written to sit alongside the slides, so if you change a slide after rehearsing, send it over and the matching part of the text is adjusted.

What is included

  • Speech text of about 7 minutes
  • Text divided by slide
  • Opening and thanks to the committee in the customary form
  • Short sentences suited to speaking
  • Marked pauses and transitions between slides
  • Version in Polish or the language of your defence

Who it is for

  • You have slides but do not know what to say
  • You get nervous and want the text to hand
  • Your defence is in Polish and you are not confident speaking it
  • You need to fit a strict time limit

How we work

Step 1

Send your slides and thesis

Plus the time limit, if your department sets one.

Step 2

We prepare the text

We prepare the text for each slide and check the timing.

Step 3

You rehearse

Read the text aloud with a timer, and tell us what does not sound right so we can adjust it. The text does not duplicate the slides, so you are not repeating what the committee can already see on screen.

Questions and answers

Can I read from notes?

It depends on the committee and your department’s customs. It is best to know the text well enough to only glance at your notes. That is why we keep it short.

What if the limit is not 7 minutes?

Tell us the limit at the start and we will adjust the length. The base price covers a text of about 7 minutes.

Will you help with the committee’s questions?

Those are not part of the speech. For that, there is defence preparation with typical questions based on your thesis.
