Thesis research methodology: methods, sample, hypotheses
Methodology is the part supervisors (promotors) ask the most questions about, especially in master’s theses. We help you build the link between the problem, questions, methods and data, and explain every choice so that you can defend it.
How to write the methodology chapter of a thesis in Poland
In a Polish thesis, the methodology section usually answers a fixed set of questions: what the research problem is, what the research questions and, in some fields, the hypotheses are, which methods, techniques and tools were used, and who or what was studied. Some departments want this as a separate chapter; others fold it into the introduction or the empirical chapter. Your guidelines or sample theses from your department will show which.
Help with research methodology starts with consistency rather than terminology. The problem, the questions, the method and the data have to form one chain, and promotors notice quickly when a survey cannot answer the question it is meant to answer. We check that chain first and propose a design before writing any text, so you can show it to your promotor while it is still easy to change.
Polish methodological vocabulary can be a hurdle in itself. Polish social science handbooks often distinguish between metoda, technika and narzędzie badawcze, and committees sometimes ask about the difference. We use the terms your field uses and explain each one in plain language.
The methodology should be settled before data collection starts, so it is usually the first thing to fix after the outline. The price depends on whether the design is qualitative, quantitative or mixed and how long the chapter must be; we quote it after seeing your topic and guidelines.
What is included
- Wording of the research problem
- Research questions and hypotheses, if required
- Justification of methods: quantitative, qualitative or mixed
- Description of the sample and how it is selected
- Data collection instruments and their description
- Explanations of how to answer questions about the method
Who it is for
- Your promotor writes “no methodology” and you are not sure what that means
- Your master’s thesis requires an empirical part
- You cannot decide between a survey and interviews
- The methods in the introduction do not match the chapters
How we work
Topic and requirements review
We look at your topic, the guidelines and your promotor’s comments, if any.
Methodology draft
We propose a research design and discuss it with you before preparing the text.
Methodology chapter
We prepare the chapter text with short explanations for each decision. If your promotor has already commented on the methods, we start from those comments.
Questions and answers
What’s the difference between methods and methodology?
Methods are the specific tools: questionnaires, interviews, document analysis. Methodology explains why these tools answer your question. Your promotor usually asks about the latter.
What if the research has already been done?
Then we describe the methodology as it was carried out and check that it matches the conclusions. If there are gaps, we will tell you directly.
Can you help with the questionnaire?
Yes, that is a separate service. It is better to build the questionnaire after the methodology, so that the questions match the hypotheses.
