Thesis questionnaire and survey design

A poor questionnaire produces data that proves nothing. We build the questions from your hypotheses, choose the scales and get the form ready to send out. You run the survey; we help make sure the data is worth analysing.

How to design a questionnaire for a thesis survey

A thesis survey is only as good as its questionnaire. Leading wording, two questions packed into one or scales that do not suit the planned tests usually surface at the analysis stage, when it is too late to ask respondents again. Fixing them on paper takes an hour; fixing them after collection can mean a second round of data.

We design the questionnaire backwards from what you need to show. Each hypothesis or research question gets the items that measure it, and each item gets a scale the planned analysis can use: a five-point Likert scale for attitudes, single choice for categories, and open questions only where you will have time to code the answers.

Students who survey more than one group, for example Polish and Ukrainian employees, need language versions that ask exactly the same thing. We keep the versions aligned item by item, which matters when you later compare the groups.

Before launch, show the draft to your promotor. Some departments also require ethics committee approval or written consent from the organisation whose staff you survey, so check your guidelines early. The price depends on the number of questions, languages and types of scale, and we quote it once we have seen your hypotheses.

What is included

  • Questions tied to your hypotheses and thesis objectives
  • Choice of scales: Likert, multiple choice, open questions
  • Introductory text for respondents about anonymity
  • Polish, Ukrainian or English version
  • Online form set up for distribution
  • Spreadsheet for exporting responses for analysis
  • Check for leading and double-barrelled questions

Who it is for

  • Your supervisor (promotor) approved a survey, but you have no questions yet
  • Your questionnaire was returned because of leading questions
  • You are surveying people in several languages
  • You want to collect data in a way that allows statistical analysis

How we work

Step 1

Hypotheses and sample

We start with what exactly needs to be tested and who you are surveying.

Step 2

Questionnaire draft

We send you the questions for approval. Show them to your promotor before launch.

Step 3

Form and instructions

A ready-to-use form, invitation text and a spreadsheet for responses. A pilot with a few friends helps catch unclear questions before the main launch.

Questions and answers

Will you find respondents?

No. Collecting responses is part of your research. We will suggest how to word the invitation and where to find respondents who match your sample.

How many respondents do I need?

It depends on the method and your department’s requirements. We will tell you what sample size the planned tests need; you agree the number with your promotor.

Can I use an existing questionnaire?

Yes, and it is often better: validated questionnaires have already been tested. We will help you find a suitable one and cite it correctly.
